Born in Hamm/Westfahlen, Uwe studied voice, dramatic arts and dance at the Conservatory of Arts in Berlin. Shortly after his studies he was engaged as the first German performer to play Rusty in the German production of Starlight Express (Bochum). Then followed the Viennese and Dutch productions of Les Misérables where he was Assistant Resident Director as well as playing numerous roles. Leading parts in Jesus Christ Superstar, The Rocky Horror Show and Starmania followed until his breakthrough in Elisabeth with the role of Death established him in the European musical world. Two years later he got the chance to play Chris in the German-speaking premiere of Miss Saigon (Stuttgart). In 1997 he received an IMAGE award for his role as Joe Gillis in Sunset Boulevard, in the same year Uwe performed the role of The Beast in Disney's Beauty and the Beast (German Premiere, Stuttgart). After playing Chris in Miss Saigon again in 1999 Uwe performed in a new Vienna musical production Mozart! for which he won an award for Best Actor playing the part of Colloredo by the magazine 'Musicals'. Following this he played Pharaoh in Joseph. Besides Uwe's various musical engagements he constantly takes part in numerous galas and concerts including In Love With Musicals and Still In Love With Musicals with Pia Douwes, Marika Lichter, and Viktor Gernot. The new programme In Love With Musicals Again just premiered in Vienna and will be available on CD in the autumn. He also appears on television regularly as a host and guest performer. Uwe has recorded original cast albums and also released three solo CDs in Europe. He was voted the Number One German Speaking Musical Performer (Musicals Magazine) five years in a row and awarded the title of Best Young Actor 1996 by the magazine Bühne at the Vienna Opera Ball in 1997. Uwe, established as a European musical performer, is now based in New York, and looks forward to further international collaborations. His new CD Only the Best with his greatest musical hits of the last ten years will also be released in the autumn.
I was lucky enough to see him just a couple of months before he left Sunset, and quite to my surprise (and delight!) he was amazing! I thought his acting in the role was just brilliant. I just can't say enough good things about his Joe; I only wish that I had been lucky enough to also see his Biest when I went to Stuttgart....Bah. Well, there's always Mozart!, in which I did manage to see--and enjoy--his performance four times. Napoleon...he was good, like most of the cast; the show...wasn't.
