Maya Hakvoort comes from Amsterdam, was trained at the Konservatorium von Maastricht in classical voice; studied musicals and acting in Amsterdam. In addition to appearances in short films and as lead singer for jazz and pop groups, her theatre work began in 1989 with Jeans and Chicago in Belgium. After understudying Fantine in Les Misérables followed the lead role Isabella in the premiere of Eric Woolfson's musical Gaudi and in 1997 the title role of Catharine in Aachen.
In 1999 Hakvoort played Fantine in Les Misérables in Duisburg, Germany. She has also appeared in Aspects of Love in Bern, Switzerland.
